On the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, the Waterloo Association announced the winners of this year’s Richard Holmes Memorial Prize. Professor Richard Holmes died in 2010, but his legacy lives on in military history, and is commemorated by the prize. Awarded annually since 2013, the Richard Holmes Memorial Prize gifts £300 each to two students, one in Key Stages 2-4, and the other in Key Stages 5-6, for original research or writing in the area of Waterloo history.

The winners of the 2014 Richard Holmes Memorial prizes in Waterloo history are:

Hugh Simms, Key Stage 3, for his essay Wellington’s forgotten flank: The Nassau story at Papelotte, 18 June 1815

William Mitchell, Key Stage 5, for his essay To what extent did the garrison of La Haye Sainte facilitate the Anglo-German victory at Waterloo?
