Wellington’s mounting block

Thinking of Wellington’s charger Copenhagen the other day as I was writing a piece on that famous horse (watch out for a new object in our 200 iconic items collection) when I thought of the mounting block placed outside the Athenaeum Club in Waterloo Place.
The Athenaeum was started as a club in the 1820s but it was not till 1830 that the clubhouse was completed by Decimus Burton. The Great Duke was a founding member but he requested the mounting block to help him mount his horse, maybe Copenhagen from time to time.
