Portchester Castle – English Heritage
One of a series of forts from the Solent to the Wash built in the late third century by the Romans to defend against Saxon pirates – a castle was built on the site in 1120. From then on, Portchester became a convenient place of embarkation for successive kings of England departing on journeys or military expeditions abroad.
