Serjeant Gibson and I spotted this memorial to another Serjeant, Serjeant Charles Ewart of the 2nd North British Dragoons, whilst in Edinburgh yesterday – although Ewartlater  he was promoted to Ensign in the 5th Royal Veteran Battalion. This magnificent stone lies on the esplanade at Edinburgh Castle and remembers the great man who seized the eagle of the 45th Regiment of Line. On the 18th June 1816 Ewart was a guest of honour at a great banquet in Edinburgh and when asked to speak he said he “would rather fight the battle all over again than make a speech here”.
