Royal Green Jackets – Rifles Museum
Situated close to the City Centre, and the heart of historic Winchester with its Great Hall and Cathedral, this excellent Museum records, chronologically, graphically and entertainingly, the history of The Royal Green Jackets and its antecedent Regiments from 1741 to the present day.
The Museum houses an outstanding collection of uniforms, weapons, silver, paintings and medals, including 34 of the Regiment’s 59 Victoria Crosses. The exhibition entitled ‘With the Rifles to Waterloo’ opened to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the battle of Waterloo is now on permanent display; focused on the Napoleonic Wars the centrepiece of the exhibition is a magnificent, recently cleaned and conserved, diorama measuring 22′ x 11′ with 30,000 model soldiers and horses, plus an accompanying sound and light commentary telling the story of 18 June 2015.
Other popular visitor attractions include the Victoria Cross Display, ‘For Valour’, and the Recent History Section covering the history of the Regiment from the formation of The Royal Green Jackets in 1966 through to the year 2000. It tells the story of the Regiment’s involvement in Northern Ireland, the first Gulf War and in the Balkans. It includes information on ‘The Regiment Today’. Among the items on display is the Prisoner of War uniform worn by Sergeant ‘Andy McNab’ after his capture by the Iraqis in 1991.
