Not long ago I went to Russia specifically to visit Stalingrad, now called Volgograd to be present at the commemorations of the great battle.  It was -15 degrees and with wind chill – 30 degrees. But that is another story.

I had time during my stay in Russia to visit the battlefield of Borodino. I managed to walk in the snow the whole Russian line and came to centre of the battlefield where there were an enormous number of memorials from 1912 when the centenary was marked.

I mention this as I am reading a fascinating book on the whole Russian versus Napoleon story and I wish I had read it before I went to Russia.  The discussion over the “Continental System” reminds me of the hoo haa we are having now over European Market.  I recommend the book and it is very readable.
