This activity is suitable for students aged 11-16+, you can download a free, printable PDF version here.

Students could use a simple app like Mematic to create modern-day memes using historical images such as the Velocipede or artworks such as the statue of Boulton, Watt and Murdoch. Students then research the image and write new, historically accurate memes and compare the two. Discuss the ways in which the historical context of the object, painting, sculpture or other source they have chosen relates to their lives today.

Remember to consider the historical context behind a particular source – some may not be appropriate for this ‘playful’ approach.
