Mick Crumplin's Bloody Fields of Waterloo book cover

Competition now closed – thank you to all who entered!

We are offering you the chance to win a copy of The Bloody Fields of Waterloo, Michael Crumplin’s masterly account of medical support and surgery during and after the battle.

Part of the Waterloo 200 team, Michael is a retired surgeon from Wrexham, a curator and archivist at the Royal College of Surgeons and an authority on battlefield surgery during the Peninsula and Napoleonic Wars.

Some 55,000 soldiers were killed or wounded at Waterloo and the study begins with a brief overview of the principal battle of the 1815 campaign, with medical commentary and an outline of the ranking and types of medical staff with their responsibilities.

Waterloo was visited by Britain’s only (Regius) Professor of Military Surgery in Edinburgh, John Thomson, who toured the Belgium hospitals after the battle and wrote a valuable report on his findings among the wounded. As well as covering Thomson’s findings the book also pulls together a collection of (largely British Army) medical anecdotes relating to wounded officers and men, some better known than others.

Together these chapters make for a fascinating insight into the bloody backdrop of Britain’s most famous battle.

To win it answer the following question:

What was the name of Wellington’s personal physician and surgeon who amputated the leg of Henry Paget, Lord Uxbridge, at Waterloo?

Hint: you will find the answer in our 200 Objects of Waterloo section in the description of this famous object.
